March 5, 2012 Polishing Cement Floors

The floors in the entire house and front and back porches are to be polished, stained and sealed.  This work needs to be done prior to the drywall since it is kind of messy.  So Remi from Texas Concrete Floors were hired to make the floors beautiful.  No additional flooring will be required.

Lots of equipment and supplies were needed.  It took them almost half a day to get "mobilized".  Now that I see all that is involved, I can see they need a lot of stuff to do their work and complete control of the construction site.

They start with a 50 grit but the grinders are diamond impregnated and each cost $23.  The water is used to cool the diamond cutters.  They worked until dark on Monday which was about 7-8 hours non-stop.

One item that caused problems was an electrician had to be found to add the dryer-type connection to the power pole.  There was a 220v connection but not the right type and it only had a 20 Amp breaker on it.  Their machine pulled around 30 Amps.  Remi found a referral at Home Depot and the electrician came out right away and only charged $50 for the service call.  At least the guys could begin to grind the surface.  We were off.

The process seemed to be grind with finer and finer diamond grits, vacuum up the water which is in the white tank that is used to cool the grinders.

This is the pattern left by the machine showing there are about 10 diamond pads that seem to wear out pretty fast.  They had to order more pads sent Fed Ex to my house.

I asked Eric if he vacuumed at his house since he seemed to be doing such a good job.  He laughed and said, "Yes, he did all the cleaning at his house where he lived with two other guys."

After almost 3 hours of sanding/grinding, I couldn't see much difference but I am trusting these guys to know what they are doing.
